Though the mono fin had been invented in Russia in the mid 70's, they were virtually unknown in the US, outside competitive diving circles. Unaware of their existence Short came up with the idea of a mono fin-like inner structure for the fluke of the tail to increase it's propulsion abilities. He decided to use a strong but pliable clear plastic called Butyrate. A material he was familiar with from his work at Don Post Studios that had also been used to create Robby the Robot's domed head. By inserting it in-between the top and bottom layers of the urethane fluke he created the first mermaid tail to use a mono fin. The mono fin has now become a standard element in almost all of the commercial tails sold throughout the world. Below, you can see Short cutting out the pattern for the Splash tail mono fin. ...
