Downtown San Marcos, Texas was filled Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017, with mermaids, mermen, merpets and all things mer, for an annual parade and festival celebrating art, history and culture of the Central Texas town. And of course, there were mermaids.

For being landlocked, San Marcos has quite the history, and love affair, with mermaids. Those mythical creatures long were a main attraction at the old theme park Aquarena Springs, now the Meadows Center for Water and the Environment.
But back in the day Texans loved to watch the underwater shows put on by park mermaids underneath Spring Lake.

On Friday night many in the Central Texas town gathered at the old park for the Mermaid Society Art Ball.
The evening paid tribute to mermaids, and those who love them, with dance, cocktails, boat rides and performance art.
Then on Saturday the whole town seemed to catch mermaid fever with The Mermaid Downtown Parade and Mermaid Aqua Faire.

A downtown mermaid promenade was created to celebrate the city's river and art culture and history with a festival atmosphere, which followed the parade.
And, of course, there were plenty of mermaids. But of the fresh water variety, mind you.
