Coney Island Mermaid Parade: When And Where To Watch Saturday's Festival

The 35th Mermaid Parade marches into Coney Island this weekend.

CONEY ISLAND, BROOKLYN — Perhaps New York City's wackiest festival is about to make its annual trek through Coney Island. The flamboyantly over-the-top annual Mermaid's Parade will wind down Surf Avenue and onto the Boardwalk Saturday.

The event – now in its 35th year – runs from 1 to 4 p.m.

Presented by Coney Island USA, a not-for-profit arts organization, the Mermaid Parade is touted as the largest art parade in the nation, a celebration of ancient mythology and honky-tonk rituals of the seaside.

The event showcases more than 1,500 creative individuals from all over the boroughs — and beyond — and is rooted in equal parts in entrepreneurial spirit and community pride. At the forefront of the event are “Queen Mermaid” and "King Neptune," crowns which this year will be bestowed on Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of the band Blondie.

The parade will start at West 21st Street and Surf Avenue before rolling east to West 10th Street. From there, marchers will turn south toward the boardwalk. Cars and motorized floats will continue down Surf Avenue, passing West 10th Street and exiting the parade.

At the boardwalk, marchers and push-pull floats will turn west and head toward West 17th Street until, at Steeplechase Plaza, the parade will disband. A map of the parade route is available on the Coney Island USA website.

10th annual Mermaid Parade to 'float' through Marshall - MADISON COUNTY, N.C.

Come celebrate the 10th annual Mermaids in Marshall where pirates, mermaids, and other sea creatures are encouraged to attend! Galleries and restaurants in downtown Marshall will be staying open late, restaurants will be offering menus inspired by the sea and there will be an overall celebration of Marshall and the French Broad River. From 10:00am to 5:00pm, enjoy bounce house, inflatable slides and games free for 12 and under, craft vendors, live music, fish fry and hotdog cookout! Please consider being part of our parade with your float. The parade leaves the island at 6:00 and returns to the island after it's swim though town.

Downtown Marshall will transform into an aquatic scene for the 10th annual Mermaid Parade.

On Saturday, June 3, sea creatures and ship raiders will roll through Main Street.

There will be something for the whole family as people wear costumes, and kids can have fun on a huge water slide.

There will also be games, a fish-fry, craft vendors and restaurants will offer sea-inspired menus.

The festival is from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday. The Mermaid Parade begins at 6 p.m.

“When I heard the parade needed funds to stay afloat, I was eager to contribute so Coney Island can continue this extraordinary annual event.”

Orbach Group chairman Meyer Orbach will contribute funds to Coney Island USA to help keep the annual Mermaid Parade afloat.

The Mermaid Parade started in 1983 and this year’s king and queen are Blondie band members Deborah Harry and guitarist Chris Stein. The organizers started the campaign this month with a goal of $50,000 to cover all the costs of permitting, security and other expenses that go into creating the parade, which has grown tremendously in participation and turnout since its inception.

Orbach, who grew up in Manhattan Beach, donated $20,000 to Coney Island USA, organizers of the Mermaid Parade, on Thursday at the group’s Surf Avenue headquarters. He challenged other New Yorkers to also donate to the storied parade so organizers raise the $50,000 needed for the Mermaid Parade to sail smoothly.

“The Mermaid Parade celebrates Coney Island’s history of craziness – the carnival mayhem and the unpredictability of the ocean. This is a parade for everyone to show off their silly side. I’m thrilled that more and more people turn out every year for this wonderful event but it also means we need more money to keep it safe and festive. I’m grateful that Meyer Orbach has made this generous donation,” said Dick Zigun, the nonprofit’s founder and artistic director.
